America’s Debate On Global Climate Change

Genevieve Lambert, Writer

Global climate change and the science behind it seems to be a greatly debated topic in today’s society. Scientists have proven many reasons as to why climate change is real, yet people still chose to believe that climate change is not real. Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere have been drastically rising at uncontrollable rates since industrial and technological growth have innovated the world. Factories and machines are the backbone in producing the world’s growing economy; although the economy is growing the environment is degrading due to the pollutants that come from these industrial technologies. For centuries atmospheric carbon dioxide levels had not been over 300 parts per million, today the CO2 levels in the atmosphere have been recorded to be 400 parts per million. Multiple experiments have been conducted and extensive research has been conducted by some of the most renowned scientists worldwide in order to get to the bottom of this crisis. Despite this scientific research, many people have chosen to ignore the facts and evidence of the global warming that is currently happening, but science does not lie and the facts of this global phenomena are recorded as follows.

Global sea levels rose approximately 6.7 inches in the last century and in the past decade the sea levels have nearly doubled that of the last century. Global surface temperature has recorded some of the most drastic warmings since 2001. 2015 was the first year that recorded a global average temperature that was 1 degree Celsius or more over the 1880 to 1890 average. Warming is still occurring and increasing as time goes on, a great example would be the lack of snow and cold weather that certain areas, such as our own in Maryland, has failed to receive. Maryland has not experienced the weather it is used to, in fact the recorded temperature in Maryland on February 23rd, 2017 was a high of 75 degrees fahrenheit; in February!! Much of the heat that has been radiating the earth is due to the ozone depletion, which is the result of pollution. This heat has been absorbed by the oceans which has further resulted in an increase ocean water temperature therefore altering the environment of many organisms and occasionally resulting in an environment that certain organisms can no longer thrive in. The heat has also resulted in the depletion and melting of the Ice Caps. The Ice Caps are home to many organisms, such as polar bears, who can no longer survive in these conditions. Due to changing temperatures ice caps are melting adding to the previously mentioned problem of rising water levels, as well as the issue of glacial retreat which is occurring in all corners of the world including the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alaska and Africa.

These issues are all real things that are happening in the modern day which are all results of global warming. More than one-quarter of American people are choosing to believe that climate change is a hoax despite the fact that 97% of scientists believe that it is true. There reasoning is that they have either not noticed a change in weather, temperatures vary naturally, scientific data is misleading, news reports are wrong. Many people also believe that God is in control and therefore everything will work out or the simply refuse to believe it is true. People will chose to believe what they want, but at the end of the day the science surrounding this issue proves to be very real.
