Should Plastic Bags Be Banned?

The ban of plastic bags has been a highly controversial topic over the years due to the numerous contributions to pollution. Plastic bags have shown to pollute our water, harm sea life and litter the land which leads to various environmental issues. If we don’t do something now, our environment will deteriorate.

Plastic bags wouldn’t be as large of a problem for the environment if they were easy to dispose of. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, “Of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste generated each year, less than 10% has been recycled.” Environment.co also states that Plastic bags can take up to a thousand years to decompose, which is extremely concerning. Within those thousands of years that the bags aren’t decomposing, they contribute to littering our land and polluting water. causing problems for both sea and land life. Animals mistaking plastic bags for food not only threatens their health but also poses a great risk to human health since animals are a significant food source for humans. When animals unknowingly ingest plastic, that results in plastic particles becoming present in our bodies.

While this plastic bag problem may seem to be insoluble until a ban is set in place, there are numerous things that you can do to help save our environment. Simple activities and actions, such as investing in reusable bags and cups or helping clean and dispose of trash on local beaches or rivers, can make a substantial difference. Plastic bags have inflicted several consequences on our environment for years, and it’s time for us to take action and save our planet.
