Is The Student Workload Too Much To Handle: Fact or Opinion?

At Tuscarora High School, students often complain about the unbelievable amount of work that gets assigned in a week. Furthermore, students claim that the workload given is taking a toll on their mental health. This article will analyze data that was collected from different teachers and students to determine whether this claim is a fact, or exaggeration.

“Students Readjusting To The ‘Normal’ Workload Pre-Pandemic” is an article written by Victoria Thompson at Francis Lewis High, speaking about the difference in student assignments before and after the pandemic. The article darts off with a very attention drawing statement: “The average high school student today, has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950’s.”

When observing other students at Tuscarora High School, it was noticed that the majority of the students are overwhelmed with how much work an assignment can be, while other students are tired and not able to complete the task given.

When Students at Tuscarora High School were asked if they felt as though too much work gets assigned in a day,Gizelle Lamptey, a student-athlete at Tuscarora High, agreed: “Definitely. I feel that teachers are constantly giving so much work and forget  that we have three other classes to worry about.”

Many students at Tuscarora can argue the fact that there’s too much work assigned within a week. However, what about the teachers and students at Tuscaora who view it differently? “Depending on whether the lesson revolves around vocabulary, grammar or real life application, assignment workload and quantity widely vary” says Senor Escobar, a Spanish teacher at Tuscarora High School.

When Marching Band Member Daniella Martinez, was also asked about whether she  feels like she  gets assigned too much work, she  differed: “No I don’t. I feel comfortable with the amount of work teachers are giving right now. I would argue that teachers aren’t using FLEX  time for what it’s made for (helping students understand the concept of the lesson/ catching up).”

In closing, people will always view this matter differently. If you are unable to consider changing your workload, at least take the time to think about the negative effects it could have on a student who is already battling multiple assignments from other classes each day.
