Is Technology Taking Over Our Lives?

Michael De Guzman, Writer

In this day and age, technology continues to grow and improve. It makes the impossible, possible. Without technology, many minimal and easy to do tasks could become extremely difficult. The luxuries we use on an everyday basis, the services we depend on, could be all wiped away. Technology allows us to communicate with others around the world, technology allows us to help others in need, but technology has also been used to hurt others as well. Technology is an undeniable necessity in modern everyday life, but is too much technology a good or bad thing? Has it hurt more than helped? Or does the good outweigh the bad?

Technology has introduced many shortcuts and conveniences at our service. Technology has made jobs easier to do, and it has allowed all sorts of information to spread around the world. Technology has revolutionized the way people live. Students can take electronic classes online, teachers assign work, and students can turn their work in online. Need a device that can help you with all your basic needs and more? No problem! Smartphones and smartwatches got you covered with an array of apps and services at the palm of your hand. Advanced technology has come very far, and it only gets better with technological innovations for the disabled. There is an abundance of new and improved prosthetic limbs for the disabled and new medicine/vaccines for diseases that could not be cured in the past (link).

However, technology has also created a sense of dependence. Today, people rely on their smartphones or computers to remind them of important events, or to talk to nearby friends and family through text and video calling, when one can see them in person opposed to a small pix-elated screen. Forget all the toys you grew up with, kids today have tablets, kindles, and their parent’s phones, all with fun to play apps and access to the internet. Easy access to the internet has resulted in an increase of cyber-bullying among children (link). It’s common to see people looking down at their phones rather than conversing with others. Technology has influenced users to become less social in reality and more active on social media. Lack of exposure to real life situations will lead to children incapable of effectively dealing with them when they are older (link).

kidstechnologyTechnology is an amazing tool for people of all ages and backgrounds. It allows us to live our days at ease because of its resources and capabilities. Information can spread across the globe in a matter of seconds, and many everyday tasks have become easier to do. However, technology has also brought upon us many problems. Since technology is so entertaining and convenient, many people have become less social in reality and more interactive on social media on the internet. So is technology a good or a bad thing? Well, like many things, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle and is probably a matter of perspective. But, let’s hear from our Titan community on this, take our reader poll below and let us know what YOU think.
