Andrew Joseph White is a young adult fiction/horror author, whose newest release marks his first break into adult horror. Known for his New York Times Bestselling book, “Hell Followed With Us,” he has become a major part in showing an accurate depiction of transgender men and boys. His books have been a massive part of showing the trans journey within fictional scenarios, but still staying realistic with connecting to how transgender people see the world. He has also been a staple in showing accurate autism representation from his experiences and struggles with speech he himself has experienced.
White is a trans male author. Because of this, his writing takes a lot of feelings from his personal experience unlike some other authors who are only able to write secondhand experiences. As a result of being trans he has lots of connection to the LGBTQ+ community and being able to write many different kinds of queer characters including: a transgender woman and many different depictions on different sexualities. His writing can cater to many different types of people who enjoy his style of writing and a different spin on standard horror.
White is also a good example of accurate representations of autism in his characters. He himself is an autistic man and writes a lot from his experiences with it. In his newest novel, (his first adult horror novel) “You Weren’t Meant to be Human;” it has a take on his struggles with speech. He shows this through using an autistic main character who is selectively mute, only saying one word throughout the entire book.
Throughout his career, his writing has improved and expanded out more and more, therefore reaching and connecting with more people. His books are an amazing depiction of non-standard horror; focusing on the depravity of man rather than using just the supernatural to be scary. His writing pulls you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat with his amazing descriptions and dialogue throughout his books. All his books have amazing reviews just showing how many people have been able to understand and connect with his writing. For example, Anonymous stated, “White’s books have helped me find my identity and recognize and accept what I was feeling about myself.” Once you read his writing you won’t want to stop.
