Sabor de Cuba, ranked #16/318 of best restaurants in Frederick, is also owned by the family of a fellow Titan, Giselle Gattorno. Giselle and her family have owned this fine Cuban cuisine establishment for about 4 years and have managed to achieve major success in such a short amount of time. “It’s freaking awesome knowing that your hard work has paid off”, Giselle exclaimed. She admitted that working with her family “may be stressful and annoying at times, but being all in it together just brings us closer and able to share the experience.” Giselle spends most of her weekends working there during the school year and about 24 hours a week during the summer. Besides being with her family, her favorite parts about working at Sabor de Cuba is getting to work with one of her good friends, and classmate, Kim Paz, and also “the free food!” If ever you’re in the mood for a nice night out downtown for delicious authentic food, check out Sabor de Cuba!

Gaby Galvez, a hard worker at her family’s bakery, spends countless of her hours occupied at Deliciosa Bakery. Though, don’t think they just get to lay back and relax all day, as every one of her family members contributes much to this business. When asking Gaby what it’s like to work with her family all the time she confesses that, “It brings us closer and everybody knows the value and takes care of the business.” Deliciosa Bakery has very unique and delicious “handmade fresh bread and pastries every single day.” Go visit Gaby while she’s working, which is almost every day, and get some tasty treats!

Have you met our wonderful new students Nick and Natalie Markoff? If so, have you ever thought about the correlation between their last names and “Markoff’s Haunted Forest”? Well if you have, you were right! The haunted forest is actually part of their family owned business, Calleva Camp, and has become a main attraction. But along with the forest, they have many other programs. In the summer they have a variety of summer camps and water activities, while in the fall they‘re popular for their haunted forest and enchanted forest, in the winter they hold snow clubs and many snow activities, and lastly in the spring they are big on horseback riding and many other programs. Nick works at the camp throughout the year and is a kayak instructor and camp counselor. During the fall season he dresses up to scare people and even walks around on stilts. Much of his extended family; including uncles, cousins, and grandparents, all contribute their lives to making this camp so successful. Nick states that “working with so much family gets exhausting, but it keeps us close.” No matter what the season is, there’s always something fun to do at the Calleva Camp. Especially with the Halloween season coming up, there’s definitely an excuse to check it out!

Have you ever had pizza from our Tuscarora concessions? If you have then you know what Starvin Marvins pizza tastes like, and it’s delicious! Opened in 1982, Starvin Marvins is a family business, located in Frederick and Gaithersburg, owned by the Foundas family. Christina, Brooke, and Nicole Foundas are all Tuscarora students and members of this large Greek family. Brooke explains, “Our business is very successful. We’ve been here in Frederick for 6 years and cater to many sporting events: including Tuscarora, Ballenger Creek Middle School, and the Frederick Keys Stadium.” Both Christina and Brooke admit that working with their family “brings [them] closer together and makes for better customer service.” Many people feel that Starvin Marvins is just a pizza shop, but their menu is huge; including subs, burgers, gyros, salads, specialty fries, appetizers, cheesecake, and much more! Not only is the food wonderful, but the service is excellent. With many past and present Tuscarora students as the staff and a friendly Foundas always there, customers will always be greeted with a smile. “Everyone is family there, even if they aren’t technically family” Brooke states. With walk in, pick up, or delivery options, there’s always a way to get a nice family cooked meal!
