In recent years, the conversation around artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked concern about its potential to disrupt job markets and shift human interactions. While it is true that AI is evolving quickly, the idea that it poses an immediate threat to humanity is exaggerated. Instead, we should view AI as a powerful tool that can enhance our lives and bring productivity.
The general apprehensiveness about AI replacing human jobs often overlooks the difference between tasks that are repetitive and tasks that require creativity, emotional intelligence and complex decision making. According to Bruce Draper, a computer science professor at Colorado State University, “The only human-level general intelligence that we are aware of is the human brain. Right now, we have very large, very sophisticated, but often quite limited AI models that are good at specific things and not good at anything else.” This indicates that while AI can automate predictable tasks, it cannot replicate the unique qualities that make us human.
Furthermore, the idea that AI might threaten our jobs is not a conclusive statement. Instead, researchers argue that AI can serve as a way to be productive. For instance, Yann Truong in an article titled “AI Is an Exciting Opportunity, Not a Threat” notes, “AI is likely to help most human employees significantly increase their productivity.” By taking over mundane tasks, AI allows employees to concentrate on more meaningful and creative works.
Oftentimes, I am scrolling through TikTok and come across the stupidest AI trends ever. Currently, there is a trend of using a CapCut template (an editing program) and replacing an object with a character or idol of sorts. Then, the character or idol is pressed down by a hydraulic press, squeezed by a pair of hands, melted, exploded and then inflated like a balloon then proceeding to fly off-screen, while a retro upbeat audio plays in the background saying, “Crush it, melt it, squeeze it, pop it.” These trends are made for entertainment and jokes, and give a good laugh to anyone viewing the video. This is not the only AI trend I have seen on TikTok, as there are many– and I mean many– more out there. Is this the AI people truly believe will take over the world and replace jobs when it can’t even look as smooth as a human edited work or transition effectively? It is painfully obvious too when AI is being used in places such as artworks and school assignments.
In conclusion, the idea surrounding AI needs to shift away from fear and apprehension. By looking at AI as a tool for enhancement instead of a threat, we can use its strengths to create a more innovative and productive society. As Draper states, “I think there will be more benefits than costs, but I do admit there are costs.” We should focus on making use of the benefits of AI as much as we can, while dealing with the challenges together.

I find your article very informative and can’t help but agree with the idea that A.I cannot replace the uniqueness of the human brain and its ideas. On the other hand I still find A.I awfully scary due to the fact that many students, especially those in college, using A.I on their assignments. And in my personal opinion I do not wish to have a hot cheeto girl who used A.I for all her assignments operating on me. Now I do believe A.I will help the human race significantly, but i also believe that the way students use it is very harmful for our society.
