David Schwab
Mr. David Schwab, an English teacher here at THS, is originally from Towson, Maryland. When asked what he remembers most about his hometown his reply was a simple TBK which stands for Towson Burger King, a popular hang-out for local youths. Mr. Schwab was a good student in high school though he admits he could have applied himself a tad more at times. It was during his high school years when he decided that he wanted to pursue a career in education and he gives credit to his teachers for inspiring him to want to follow in their footsteps.
Mr. Schwab admits that he had interest in becoming an Art teacher but explained that what he had in appreciation for art, he lacked in actual artistic talent. Mr. Schwab worked at several schools prior to coming to Tuscarora. He worked at Linganore for seven years, took a year off to work in the private sector as a technical editor at a local business, returned to spend a year at Walkersville and finally landed here at Tuscarora where he’s taught for the past 11 years.
When asked what he likes best about Tuscarora Mr. Schwab explained that he loves the subject he teaches, but, more than that, he genuinely appreciates the young people he teaches his subject to. On the other hand, one of his primary dissatisfactions with education in general is the emphasis on standardized testing. Mr. Schwab feels as though the “metric used to judge schools and students is a bit dehumanizing” and, while he understands the politics behind testing, he personally feels that we are losing some of the human connection that is so important to the profession.
In his spare time, when he’s not teaching, Mr. Schwab enjoys hiking, travel, and spending time with his family. He says that in a perfect world he would have more time to write and, if he had said time, he would endeavor to craft short stories or even poetry. When asked to give one piece of advice that he would like to give to the young people at Tuscarora he quotes Socrates “Know Thyself”.
