Titans talk about the Trump Presidency

Kayla Green, Writer

Donald Trump went from being a wealthy and powerful real estate developer (The Trump Organization) and television producer (The Apprentice), to becoming the President of the United States. From the beginning of his outsider campaign, Trump has been a controversial candidate. From his unorthodox speeches to his love of Twitter, Trump was a candidate that nobody thought could possibly ascend to the highest office in the land. But despite the odds against he won the primaries and then the general election and is now the 45th president of the United Sates.

Over one hundred days into his presidency and he already hit a brick wall and Tump’s style has changed very little from the campaign trail. While this obviously pleases his base, it does very little to garner support from a broader swath of the American people. For evidence of this one need look no further than his approval rating which is historically low for a president this early into his term, as recently as last week, Gallup polls showed Trump’s approval numbers sitting at just 37%. Obviously this is just one snapshot of this new presidency and there’s still plenty of time to improve but the fact remains that Donald Trump is an historically unpopular President and his administration has created a great deal of divisiveness in our country. We decided to see just how this plays out in the halls of Tuscarora so we interviewed several Titans to get their take on our new President.

I talked to Ceili Galante a senior at Tuscarora High School, and she says that even though she is not an avid follower of politics that she doesn’t support Trump and  believes that he is all bark and no bite due to the fact that all he does is talk and really doesn’t show action. She is really bothered by the fact that he doesn’t have a background in politics and also how he misjudged the responsibility of the president. She also finds it ridiculous that someone who has filed bankruptcy more than once  is in charge of our money.

Next I talked to a student that wanted to be remain Anonymous, They have said that they support Trump and like how that not only he wants the people who are in the United States to be safe but also the people who are coming into the country will be as well. They also are not offended by his lack of knowledge or the comments that he makes. They also stated that they are not bothered by the protesters or the non-supporters  because they feel that no matter what would have happened in the election there will always will be protesters, just like there were for Obama and there would have been if Hillary would have been president.

Later I talked to Ana Coric, Ana is an exchange student from Switzerland and in Switzerland they are a democratic federal republic which means that the people vote on everything. She has been living in the United States since the beginning of the school year and has seen the election unfold, so i asked her for her thoughts on Trump and this is what she thinks about all that has happened. She doesn’t support Trump and  believes that he makes bad decisions that will not only come back on America but also others countries. She also believes that the bombing of Syria was a not only drastic but not needed. She also feels a little scared for what Trump has in store for world in the future.

Lastly I talked to Ivy Wright, she supports Trump and feels great that he is the President. She also believes that Trump was a better candidate than the others that were running or that could have ran for the presidency. She likes that he actually follows through with what he said like the bombing on Syria. She also states that it doesn’t bother her when he said crazy outlandish comments. And she can’t wait to see what he has to offer.

So, while this is an admittedly small sampling, it seems that there really are two camps when it comes to Trump, those who support him and believe he will deliver on the promises he made on the campaign trail and those who feel he is eminently unqualified to be our Commander in Chief. Only time will tell if President Trump will be a President for all Americans or if he will simply pander to his base supporters.
