Spoiler Alert! The following article contains spoilers for the movie ‘Split’
Night Shyamalan has written and directed another bone-chilling thriller with his current movie Split that was released on January 20, 2017 (in the US). The movie Split is deeply suspenseful and slightly frightening with a truly twisted ending.
The movie follows three teenage girls, Claire(Haley Lu Richardson), Marcia(Jessica Sula), and Casey(Anya Taylor-Joy) who are kidnapped by a guy named Kevin Wendell Crumb(James McAvoy), whom suffers from DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). It has been told that he has 23 personalities that take present such as one personality is a 9 year old child “Hedwig” ,another is one the has OCD and likes little girls “Dennis”, one of his personalities acts as the boss of the other personalities “Barry”. Kevin only really showed these personalities to his psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley). Dr. Fletcher later becomes concerned when Kevin’s personalities start acting irrational. Little did she know that the three girls were being kept in an underground bunker trying to get escape. While trying to get free Dennis “attacks” them and tries to take Marcia away. A few seconds later she comes back into the room unharmed. After that they met another one of Kevin’s personalities who dresses up as a women, she calls herself “Patricia”. “Patricia” tells them that “Dennis won’t hurt them and that they serve a higher a purpose. Then “Dennis” pretends to be “Barry” and go to Dr. Fletcher’s office to tell her to disregard the email, she later realizes that she is not talking to “Barry” but “Dennis”. She gets him to open up about “The Beast”, a character whom she believed to be fake. The girls have been trying to escape but each time they have failed and finally they were isolated from each other. Casey later befriends Kevin’s personality “Hedwig” to get him to help her escape. She later finds a walkie talkie and tries to contact someone, but as she is trying to get a hold of someone her and “Hedwig” start fighting each other, she is later recaptured and is taken back to the room. Casey then has a flashback about her troubling past with her uncle. During this “Dennis” goes back to Dr. Fletcher’s and talk about Kevin’s parents about how his dad abandoned him and how his mom abused him. “Dennis” also confines in Dr. Fletcher that “The Beast” is real. Dr. Fletcher becomes really alarmed by the amount of emails “Barry” was sending her that she goes to Kevin’s home to talk to “Dennis”. As she is talking to “Dennis”, he tells her vaguely about his plan for “The Beast”. She later becomes suspicious about his plan and takes a look around. She later finds one of the girls in a room. She is later capture herself. Then “The Beast” finally surfaces and comes back and kills Dr. Fletcher. Before he kills Dr. Fletcher, she writes a note and leaves it on the table. After “The Beast” kills Dr. Fletcher he turns to Claire and Marcia and kills them. Casey later escape and finds “The Beast” killing her friends and shuts the door on him and runs. She runs into the other room and finds Dr. Fletcher dead and also finds the note that the doctor left saying to says the name Kevin Wendell Crumb. When “The Beast” catches up to her she yells the name and Kevin himself surfaces and realizes his actions and asks Casey to grab the shotgun and kill him but before she could his personalities took over and “The Beast” once again comes back and starts chasing her. Casey runs and grabs the shotguns and bullets and goes to shot him but misses. He later catches up to her and eats a piece of her leg. She is able to break free and get away. She stumbles upon cages and locks herself in there and continuing shoot at “The Beast”. He tells her how he will get rid of all of the untouched people in the world. She lands 2 shots at him but they didn’t do much damage and still goes after her. As he was about to kill her he noticed her scars and deemed her as pure and leaves her. Later Casey is rescued by a worker at a zoo. Later a police officer tells her that her uncle is her to get her, the officer notices Casey’s hesitation to return home with her uncle. In a secluded area some of Kevin’s personalities “Dennis”, “Patricia”, and “Hedwig” are talking among themselves about their future plans for “The Beast”.
The movie itself was great the movie keep me on my toes, you didn’t know what was going to happen next. And the movie really captivates you as you watch. But I do highly recommend watching the movie Unbreakable before you watch Split because there is a minimal connection between the two movies at the last few seconds in Split. After watching I rate this movie 9/10.
