Book Review: Everything, Everything
September 8, 2016
Madeline has been told since birth that she has SCID, or “bubble baby disease,” meaning she cannot leave the safety of her house because she her immune system does not function. Maddy dreams of the outside world and what it must be like to live out there. The only friends she has are Carla, her live-in nurse, her mom, and the characters in her books. That all changes when she sees the moving truck next door. Olly is always dressed in black and has a turbulent family. His dad is abusive and his mom refuses to leave. He dreams of escape, but refuses to leave his mom and sister. While he wants to leave, he can’t help but wonder about the mysterious girl next door who never leaves her house. As things progress, they become friends and discover just how much they are willing to risk for each other.
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is recommended for anyone looking for a good, quick read. The story is sometimes told through pictures and has short chapters. This book has also won the Maryland Black Eyed Susan award. This was a cute and surprisingly funny novel. I would give this book a 7.5 out of 10.
