1. What is your current profession?
I work in Marketing! I’m the Social Media and Events Coordinator for South Mountain Creamery in Middletown.
2. What year did you graduate? Were you here for all four years of high school?
I graduated in 2011, and I attended THS for all four years.
3. What do you remember most about Tuscarora High School? What were some of your favorite memories?
What I remember most about Tuscarora is the diversity of the student body. It made us so unique and interesting, and I don’t think people really understand how important that experience is. I also remember how much the school grew just in the four years there. We always seemed to grow or expand into new areas and really start to define ourselves and what we do as a school, as a student body, and as individuals.
4. Who were some of your favorite teachers? Please pick somebody other than me, I mean I know it’s hard, but try to remember somebody else who was equally inspiring wink emoticon
Some of my favorite teachers at THS were Mr. Moore in the D-Wing and Mr. Gray. They really cared about who their students were in the classroom as well as helping them grow outside of the classroom. They provided the most challenging academic environments and really pushed their students hard, but they did it in such a positive and constructive manner that the students were always motivated to meet those standards.
5. Were you a good student in high school?
I was a good student in high school, largely affected by the fact that I enjoyed school and learning immensely. I graduated with a 4.2 GPA, but because I was always my biggest critic. I’ve run into a lot of alumni recently, and talking to them about classes, many of them said they wish they had taken high school academics more seriously than they did, because they realized that it really sets you up for positive habits and work ethic going into college or the workforce. However, I always wished that I had done a little bit more in high school without the focus on schoolwork–taking more chances, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, etc. It’s important to remember that everyone learns differently both in and out of the classroom, and I think we are given opportunities to challenge and build that learning.
6. When did you decide to go into your current profession?
I had decided my senior year what I was going to go into college studying. I was a Communication major and Journalism minor. I knew that I enjoyed writing, media, learning about people, and other channels of communication, so that’s what I stuck with in college. I also knew that Communication degrees are incredibly versatile, and you can do a LOT with them, and I wanted to make sure I had that choice. After graduating college, I started applying to any and all jobs that had something to do with what I studied. I didn’t always like the job position, or didn’t always feel like I was qualified for it, but I was determined to get a job out of college. I found my job on Indeed and immediately loved the thought of a non-traditional work environment and working with the media I do.
7. If you attended college, what college (s) did you attend? What did you major in? If not, what did you do after high school?
Like I said before, I was a Communication major and Journalism minor. I attended McDaniel College for all four years in Westminster.
8. What does a typical day consist of for you?
My job definitely depends on the season! In summer and fall, I work on scheduling and giving tours of our facilities and interacting with lots of schools, day cares, summer camps, and families. In winter, we work on the marketing and promotions for all of our holiday products. Essentially, I run all of our social media platforms–Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google + blog, etc.I interact with customers and write our newsletter. I also am in charge of all our rentals and festivals. I have recently set up all the logistics of our trailer at the Frederick Fair and am currently in the middle of planning two festivals–one overnight festival for 6,000 people, and our annual two day Fall Festival for 10,000 people. I work with our equipment rentals like our pavilion, ice cream truck, and coolers as well.
9. What sort of hobbies do you enjoy?
I really like hiking and venturing new places. I love trying new places to eat, different types of galleries and festivals, live music, and the occasional Netflix binge session
10. Based on your life experiences, what is one piece of advice you would give to a current Tuscarora student?
Don’t follow the trend. And don’t follow your friends to college if you can help it. Your college decision should come from what’s best and comfortable for YOU. Meeting new people can be hard and scary, but I met my best friends in college just from ending up in the same places as them. Go out of your comfort zone and be selfish for four years. Do everything you want to do because YOU want to do it. Join a club, join a team, join Greek life, travel the world. I did. I had the best times in college doing things that I had never pushed myself to do before. Everyone grows and experiences things at their own pace. Always remember that life isn’t a competition, it’s the journey of YOU. That’s the most important. As long as you are growing, learning, being challenged, and loving yourself every day, you are living a successful life.
