Skate Frederick is a huge part of Frederick County, as it is the only Ice Skating rink in Frederick. As of October 24 it has been temporarily closed due to mechanical issues. This left many hockey teams and skaters left to find a new place to skate, but they have released an apology for having to close suddenly.
In an interview, Skate Frederick owner Edward Hostetter said, “… We are absolutely committed to getting these problems resolved. The customers have been absolutely fantastic. … It’s our number-one focus is to get this thing back up.”
Oakdale and Urbana high schools’ hockey teams were supposed to go against each other recently, but since the sudden closing of the rink, they’ve had to cancel the game. Hood College started a women’s hockey team, and they would practice at the rink, though they are unable to at the time due to the closure.
Many people and teams have been affected from the temporary close of the rink. One senior here at Tuscarora High School, Allie Wallin, who has helped with scoreboards at Frederick Skate, was asked how she feels about the rink being temporarily closed. She reflected, “It puts a lot of people out of a job. And kids will have to go further to skate.”
As of right now there is not an answer on when the rink will open again; according to Hostetter, “It wouldn’t be fair to the customers. It wouldn’t be fair to them to pick a date and then disappoint them.” There is certainly a need for Frederick Skate to be back up and running, but for now, hockey teams and skaters will just have to go elsewhere.
