At the beginning of the season Brigham Young University’s Cougars, based in Provo, Utah, were picked to finish 13th in the Big 12 Media Preseason Roll. Currently, they sit at No. 1 in the standings. Their performance against Oklahoma State last Friday, Oct. 18, cements their position for yet another week.
The game was meteoric, with both teams putting up a great performance. But, in the final quarter OSU had taken the lead 35-31 with a fourth-quarter touchdown. It looked bleak for BYU, who up until that point had been undefeated. With 73 seconds left on the clock, they did the impossible: A 4th-and-8 conversion pass, then a 27-yard run into OSU territory, and then the magnum opus of the game: a 35-yard game-winning touchdown pass from BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff to wide receiver Darius Lassiter with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. BYU did the impossible, winning the game 38-35.
When asked about the game-winning touchdown pass, quarterback Jake Retzlaff responded, “[The] coaches prepared us in every way and Darius made a great play on the ball. It was meant to be. It’s just pure joy, pure bliss, it’s unbelievable. Probably the most memorable game of my career.” BYU retains their undefeated status and No. 1 position in the Big 12 despite all odds. They’re preparing to keep it that way during their next game this Saturday, Oct. 26, against the UCF Knights.
