Hurricanes happen often in this country; they cause major damage and are dangerous for the habitants. Evacuating is a privilege, as some people have to stay behind when a hurricane strikes, not because they want to, but because they have no other choice.
Evacuating when a hurricane is happening is important for an individual’s safety. In some parts of the United States, such as Florida, hurricanes tend to happen often. Despite the level of danger between every hurricane, people have to be prepared to confront and find a place where their life is safe, in every moment that they face this situation.
There are not any specific reasons but there are various factors that influence why habitants make their decisions in these cases.
Barbara Millet, an assistant professor in the University of Miami explained in the Vox report that these decisions or influential factors “range from money to past experiences with hurricane evacuations to uncertainty about the forecast, to the perception that being at home might be safer.”
“The real story is that most people who don’t evacuate can’t evacuate. Evacuation is expensive,” Dave Call, a meteorologist and storm chaser based at Ball State University, said in Vox’s report; he added that it is not easy to leave, there are reasons such as, “people can’t take off from work, can’t afford hotels and can’t afford their meal.” Call also highlighted factors as “not being able to speak English and being an undocumented immigrant also affect those contingency plans. Evacuation isn’t a feasible option for these people, and we rarely see their stories,” Vox’s report explained.
It is important for people to have resources even if they don’t live in a place where hurricanes often happen, close cities are vulnerable to also suffer some impacts like power outages or other consequences that can affect their home. In addition to that, it is also important that every habitant pays attention to what their local news and authorities are recommending, if they are suggesting people to evacuate or if they are saying that you are in a safe area; as a result of that you can prevent and stay out of danger.
Concluding with this idea we think possible solutions for this issue is for Insurance companies to look out for those that are more vulnerable during natural disasters, as well as law enforcement helping those that may not have resources to face difficult situations like these.
