Gun violence is a very prominent issue when it comes to American society. Our lack of gun control causes people across America to have the potential access to guns which is why we should have stricter gun laws. The endangerment and loss of many lives has proved how dangerous these weapons are. This year alone, there have already been 45 school shootings in the United States. These shootings have caused innocent students and teachers to lose their lives, at the hands of a gun, around 11,600 individuals have died from gun violence just in 2024 according to ABC news.
In the United States, there should be stricter gun control in place. Many people believe that the right to bear arms (Second Amendment) should stay in place since it is their constitutional right. Majority of these people believe there should be no laws or regulations when it comes to owning firearms. As seen in recent events around the country, guns do more harm than good. Guns can serve as a form of protection against potential threats, but become dangerous when children have access to them in their household or when they are put in the wrong hands. For example, the school shooting at Apalachee High School resulted in the death of four people. Two of them were 14-year-old students, the other two were teachers. A student who lived through the shooting stated, “I really don’t want to go back; I feel like I shouldn’t have to go back to school worrying about dying. I want to go to school worrying about what my GPA is going to be when my year is over and worrying about my career.”
Another individual who was on the scene of the shooting said, “I heard gunshots outside my classroom and people screaming, people begging not to get shot, and then people sitting beside me just shaking and crying.” For the third straight year, firearms killed more children and teens, from the ages 1 to 17, than any other cause. Gun violence is a preventable safety tragedy affecting the United States.
In conclusion, addressing gun violence requires multiple approaches, with the removal of firearms from civilian hands being a significant step towards bringing more public safety. By restricting access to guns solely to law enforcement and the military, we can substantially reduce the potential for civilian-related shootings. Additionally, implementing temporary measures to remove firearms from individuals exhibiting signs of risk for self-harm or violence against others can serve as an effective short-term solution. Together, these strategies can significantly lower the incidence of gun violence, ultimately saving countless lives and fostering a safer environment for all.
