A new teacher has appeared at Tuscarora High School and it’s none other than Ms. Rommy Delgado. She’s part of the school’s Multilingual Education Program, and is beyond excited to begin her journey here. I set out to ask Delgado a few questions about her first week at THS, so that every student could get to know her a little better.
Before asking her about the finer details of her job, I wanted to know how her first week at Tuscarora had gone. She spoke, excitedly, “I feel very supported, and that’s been amazing. I feel like I fit in very well with the team that I’ve been put on. It’s also been nice to see my own kids too,” she continued, talking about how she has run into some kids that she’s taught before in her previous positions within Frederick County Public Schools, and how cool it’s been to see how they’ve grown up.
I followed up by asking her what kind of work her job entails, so that we could get a better understanding of what Delgado is doing to help students here at THS: “My job is to essentially help students who continue to have barriers to English, so working with them, chunking assignments, and making sure they’re understanding the content that they’re learning,” Delgado aims to help multilingual students that are struggling with English, whether that be with speaking, writing or reading.
Delgado has worked various teaching positions before landing a job here at Tuscarora. Originally, she was an instructional assistant within FCPS for eight years and wanted to become an elementary teacher, but something about it didn’t feel right to her, “I ended up in workforce development helping incarcerated adults get job-ready. I always knew I wanted to do something with teaching, and then out of nowhere I got a call from one of the assistant principals asking if I was interested in a full time teaching position here at Tuscarora. I wasn’t really searching for this, but it’s been exactly what I needed.”
Her first week, though full of excitement, has not been without its struggles either. She spoke, “Something that I’ve been struggling with is figuring out what my teaching style is, figuring out how I want to organize and plan and what the best way to help students is. I’ve had to readjust to the routine and everything; it definitely hasn’t been the easiest week.” However, she did say that being able to see her kids everyday has helped her a lot even amidst the stress of a new job.
Delgado is excited for her future here at Tuscarora, and can’t wait to help countless students, whether it’s with English or any other problem they might be facing. Stop by B220 to say hello!
