For over two decades, art educator MaryRose has inspired students at Tuscarora High School to embrace their creativity and express themselves through the visual arts. With 23 years of teaching experience, including 18 years at Tuscarora, her journey reflects a deep commitment to fostering artistic growth among her students.
Reed has always had a passion for art. “I’ve always loved the visual arts including the bright colors and the talent that comes with it,” she shared. Growing up, her sister was a significant influence, showcasing artistic skills that Reed admired. Despite her artistic inclinations, she pursued a degree in English, driven by a desire to teach. “When I decided I wanted to be a teacher, my mom said I couldn’t do that,” she recalled, laughing. Nevertheless, her passion for art never waned, and she found her way back to it in the classroom.
Reed is dedicated to helping her students set and achieve personal goals in their artistic endeavors. “I create lessons that connect with them personally, encouraging them to see themselves as artists,” she explained. Her approach fosters an environment where students can explore their creativity freely, “Everyone’s an artist,” she stated.
When she’s not inspiring her students, Reed enjoys spending time with her family, including her grand kids and husband. She also finds solace in reading and cooking, activities that enrich her life and provide inspiration for her teaching. “Family is everything to me,” she noted, highlighting the importance of support systems in both personal and professional realms.
Looking ahead, she hopes to revive the National Art Honor Society at Tuscarora. “I used to run it, and I’d love to get it going again for students who may not have time for art in their schedules,” she expressed, eager to provide more opportunities for artistic engagement.
For those considering a career in art, Reed offers valuable advice: “Never give up, be persistent, and believe in yourself. Look at others’ art for inspiration, but remember to evolve and change.” Her encouragement to embrace challenges resonates deeply, particularly in today’s complex world. “Life is difficult, and when things get tough, reassure yourself that it’s okay to struggle,” she advised.
Despite her passion and dedication, Reed faces challenges as a teacher. The rise of cellphones in the classroom has created distractions that hinder student engagement. “It’s hard to balance their use with academic focus,” she acknowledged. “We have perfect kids, but their attention is often diverted.”
Through her unwavering commitment to art education, Reed has not only taught countless students the technical aspects of art but has also instilled in them the confidence to pursue their passions. Her belief in the power of creativity continues to shape the artistic landscape at Tuscarora High School, ensuring that the next generation of artists is ready to make their mark.
