When the topic of social media is brought up, the first thing that might pop into a person’s mind would be some of the most popular apps at the moment. One app that might not immediately come to one’s head would be “Reddit.”
What is Reddit? Reddit is an app that is very similar to most apps we use today and has over 52 million active users. People can chat, post pictures, videos and statements about anyone or anything.
Reddit is mostly used for telling stories or asking for advice. A popular hashtag going around Reddit is “AITA?” It’s a tab where people share their experiences and ask whether or not they are in the wrong. This app can be a great tool for decision making or just wanting to communicate with people who have similar interests as you.

Although social media at times can be very helpful, society has to take into consideration the dangers that flow along with it. There are downsides to Reddit just as any other form of social media. In the U.S., 23% of Reddit users are under the age of 18. Being able to communicate with anyone or post anything may be a good aspect, but can cause serious harm, especially to those who are younger. A lot of people will create fake news or target others when in the wrong hands.
Brandon Gibson, a sophomore at Tuscarora High, agrees with this statement: “The subreddits can have a lot of negative things in there. People with bad intentions can talk to others with bad intentions.” Reddit can also be a tool used to cyberbully others, or someone can become a victim of cyber-bullying themselves.
So the next time you open up a social media app, think about what damages it could do, not just the dopamine it gives. After reading this article, ask yourself “How is social media affecting me?”
