At Tuscarora High School, nearly every major sport is represented by a team of Tuscarora Titans—football, soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross country, swimming and many more. One of these many sports represented by a Titan team is golf, hosted at the beautiful Worthington Manor Golf Club in Urbana. However, many Tuscarora students are unaware of the great things our golf team is doing.
“We happen to have a good group,” said Cameron Beckner, one of the coaches of the Tuscarora golf team and a gym/health teacher at Tuscarora. “Last year we came in fourth in the conference. Overall, those kids were just working well together.”
One up and coming golfer on the Tuscarora team is Caroline Fitzgerald, a junior and the team’s only female member. This hasn’t stopped her, however, and she’s been working hard to promote the sport to more girls.
“Yes, I think more girls should play golf,” said Fitzgerald, “it’s a fun sport to do and it’s something anybody could play for the rest of their life.”
This fall has been the first season that Fitzgerald has participated in every match, and so far she’s very happy with how it’s gone.
“I think the season has been going good so far, I was able to achieve my goal of qualifying for states this year. However, I think there is more improvement that needs to be made.”
She’s also very pleased with the performance of her team and all of the support that they have given her over the years.
“My team has always been very supportive. We’ve always been there for each other no matter what happened during a tournament or match.”
Fitzgerald also has an important piece of advice to aspiring young golfers.
“Be patient and [don’t] overthink. Golf has a lot of ups and downs, but staying patient and not overthinking throughout all of it will help you get the best results and make the most progress.”
We’re wishing Caroline and the rest of the golf team lots of luck for the rest of the fall season, and are looking forward to seeing her progress in the future.
