At Tuscarora High School, the Women’s Soccer program has grown very strong over the last few years compared to when Head Coach Troy Bowers first took over the team almost 10 years ago in 2014.
“We had players that did not even know how to kick a ball forward and that is the truth. The appropriation of good club players make a good high school really took off for the past six to seven years,” Bowers said as he talks about the progression of the program.
Since the start of this year’s senior class, the Titans have won two back-to-back county championships as well as holding impressive season records including an almost undefeated season in 2021. Bowers believes this upcoming run is to be just as strong as the previous ones as he gave deep insight on the program and what it holds.
When being asked about how the team chemistry both on the field and outside the program has changed over the years, Bowers said, “Oh my gosh it’s become better, wholeheartedly. Again, back when I first took over we had girls fighting all the time for getting stats, they wouldn’t pass the ball to each other because they didn’t want that person with their name in the paper and it killed the mojo of the program. This team and just this four year class of seniors to see how close it’s been getting to do great things outside of soccer, it’s just such a tight knit group of girls, it’s a family.”
The Titans have been held to very high standards in recent seasons due to high success for the past few years. Bowers gives immediate thoughts on what has driven this team during their strongest runs by saying, “I think it’s the players I really do. I think it’s the players’ connectability to understanding that they want to take it to the next level.”
From the first county championship that this program won during the COVID season and wanting to get better from that point on, the girls continue with this drive now during the 2023 season.
