According to the NFL Play Football organization, participation in youth sports has dropped by 13% across the board, but in one particular sport, participation is steadily on the rise.
Flag football, said by many to be one of the fastest-growing sports in America, is a variation of standard American football that involves pulling opponents’ flags rather than physical tackling. In recent times, the sport has experienced a huge surge in popularity–especially amongst girls’ leagues.
Recently, Tuscarora and other high schools in Frederick County made headlines after FCPS partnered with the Baltimore Ravens, inaugurating the first girls’ flag football league in Maryland.
“We’re kind of like pioneers for this,” said Head Coach of Tuscarora’s new girls’ flag football team, Mike O’Brien.
On Aug. 30, FCPS held their inaugural kick-off games at Frederick High School, featuring all ten high schools in Frederick County. Tuscarora defeated Brunswick 25-0.
“I like catching passes and the team aspect of it,” said Megan Rockett, a senior and wide receiver.
Many feel that the Tuscarora team is a landmark in the world of girls’ sports and a huge step in the movement to provide equal access to athletics regardless of one’s gender.
“I feel very grateful to be part of something that past Tuscarora students weren’t able to participate in,” said Jennifer Attia, a senior and wide receiver.
The county championship, featuring the top four teams in the league, will be held the week of Oct. 30. We’ll definitely be rooting for the Tuscarora team all the way to the championship win.
