Booster Vaccine has been Approved!
October 4, 2021
The Covid-19 virus and variants are still plaguing the community at a rapid rate. The vaccine has been available to the public for many months, but this week the FDA approved a booster shot for specific groups who received their initial series at least six months ago. The reason that people had to have their vaccine for at least six months was that the protection against the virus and its many variants decreased over time. However, many other factors determine who is eligible for the booster shot.
The elements determining if someone is eligible for the booster shot include age, health, job, and living situation. The CDC released a list of who is permitted to receive the vaccine at this time. That list includes anyone 65 or older, individuals who have underlying medical conditions, and those who live at a long-term care facility. However, citizens who work at high-risk places such as long-term care facilities are also eligible for the booster shot. Currently, the only available dose is the Pfizer vaccine. The FDA is presently working through the process of getting a Moderna booster shot approved. For more information, visit CDC, where eligibility requirements and further data can be found.
Although the booster shot is only available for select individuals at the time, as the days pass, the booster shot will become more widespread and available for the majority of the public. The FDA and CDC are working hard every day to ensure public safety in the hope of fighting through the pandemic and getting back to normal. Soon enough, everyone who wants a booster shot for extra protection will be able to get one.
