I don’t know about you, but I’ve found myself in the kitchen a lot during this quarantine! Whether I’m cooking, baking, or grabbing a snack… okay, okay, it’s mostly for snacking purposes. But, to make myself feel a little less guilty, I’ve been trying out some fun recipes that I’ve seen on TikTok! For example, frothy coffee has become extremely popular. It looked like a lot of work, but the comments made it sound pretty great, so I decided to try it for myself.

The particular video that I took inspiration from was posted by a girl under the username @elinorxkim on TikTok. Here’s the recipe that she used:

2 tbsp of instant coffee

2 tbsp of sugar

2 tbsp of boiling water

*You’re also going to need milk, whatever kind you prefer!*

  1. Add the instant coffee sugar, and boiling water to a bowl and mix them together with a whisk. (Be warned , this part takes AGES!) Mix until the color is a light caramel tone and the texture is where you want it.
  2. Add ice to a cup and fill that cup about halfway with milk.
  3. Add the coffee mixture to the cup. And you’re done!

This recipe seemed easy enough, but my personal experience was nowhere near as easy at it seemed. I didn’t believe her when she said that you’d be whisking until your arms fell off. I was there for about 10-15 minutes just mixing, and even then, the mixture wasn’t as fluffy as the one in the video. A lot of people suggested using a KitchenAid mixer, but I don’t own one, so I had to go the old fashioned way. Eventually, I gave up on mixing and just used what I had. I added the mixture to the milk and stirred it a little, and to be completely honest, it was really good. I’m a hardcore iced coffee fiend as without going to Dunkin for a few weeks, this was really helpful. However, after it’s mixed, it just tastes like plain iced coffee, so the bicep workout wasn’t really worth it. If you have the proper tools and gadgets, it may be a lot more fun for you and I suggest giving frothy coffee a try!

So all in all, I personally would give frothy coffee 3 out of 5 stars. It was very time consuming, but the iced coffee was really tasty and sweet! It also makes for a really cute picture if you serve it in a mason jar, so I would say that the hype is deserved!
