In the beginning of the presidential primary season there were many different people that could have taken the lead. People like Bloomberg, Biden, Warren, Sanders and others were trying to get the number one spot in the poles. But from the start the top 2 were Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden. Over time, the other candidates dropped out of the race until it was just those two. And it was like that for a while. But on wednesday the eighth of April, senator Bernie Sanders dropped out of the primary election.

After Sanders suspended his bid for the 2020 democratic nomination, there is only one candidate left standing, and that person is Joe Biden. Sanders said on April eighth in a live stream to his supporters  “I have concluded that this battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful.” calling the decision “difficult and painful¨. He also said that he supports his fellow candidate, but it is not yet known if the senator will urge his followers to support Biden.

Some say that Bernie Sanders was bound to drop out of the race some time soon. But there is logic in this claim, because for a while in the beginning Sanders was in the lead. Although in the later months of the race he was losing by wide margin to Biden. We can see this in the amount of delegates he had compared to Biden. Sanders had 914 delegates compared to the 1217 delegates that Biden had obtained. With Biden having a 303 advantage it is obvious that it would have been a very difficult campaign for Bernie  to win.

So now that Senator Bernie Sanders is gone, what does this mean for Democratic party in the general election? Well it means that Joe Biden will be the democtratic nominee for president, challenging Donald Trump. The challenge Biden now faces is consolidating the democratic party behind him and bringing the part together to present a unified opposition in order to try to deny President Trump a second term as president.
