Winter Sports Spotlight: The Boy’s and Girl’s Track and Field Teams

Steven Asare, Sports Writer

This week’s sports spotlight is on the Tuscarora Indoor Track and Field teams. As of this writing they’ve only competed in one meet but the coaches are very optimistic about the upcoming season for these different groups.

The Boys Track team is coached by Coach Motter. He Previously coached Track last year at Catoctin High. His team there was more of a distance oriented team and they tailored their training to suit that. He plans to take a different approach here “we’re trying to figure out who we are right now” Coach Motter said, though he feels that distance will also be a strong feature of this year’s team. This boys group does have a lot of members from the cross country team, including  Nick Hilderbrandt who recently committed to run at Mount saint mary’s University. Nick is backed up by Jeff Young, Nate Usher and the rest of the group who made history in cross country during the fall season.

The Girls Track Team is coached by Coach Baab. He’s been coaching here for 13 years both cross country and track. He’s previously had a lot of success here and has had multiple runners continue their careers at college. He’s Confident in his team this year especially with the runners that he has returning. Some runners coming back this year are Haley Stephenson, Maliyah Anderson, Aliyah Hopper, Jordan Johnson,  Aniya Parker and Dardlie Lefevre who recently committed to run Track and Field at James Madison University. The Girls team strength right now is their 4×200 relay.

THS is also sporting a number of athletes competing in Field events, with an emphasis on shot put. They’re coached by Ronnie Morris and Gian Byrd. ” we have a good group of girls who all show promise and get better every day” said Coach Byrd. Matt Belcher is another field athlete worth watching acvording to Coach Byrd.

With such a range of athletes from short distance to long distance to field events putting forth their best efforts, we believe the Indoor Track season has a lot of promise. We wish all our athletes luck and congratulate them for their commitment and competitive spirit. Go Titans!
