Life on the Greens: THS Golf
James Eckley

When thinking about high school sports, golf is not always the first thing to pop into one’s mind. However, Tuscarora has one of the biggest and best golf teams in Frederick County. Currently there are 15 players total on the team, a mix of all grades. 10 of the 15 players go to matches, where 6 play with their scores counting towards our schools record, and four play exhibition, a friendly match among opposing teams. With the current team now, going to states as a team is a likelihood our future.

Tuscarora is lucky enough to be able to play at the lovely course, Worthington Manor, in Urbana, thanks to our coach, Mr. Gray. Worthington Manor is one of the nicest courses in Frederick County. The team is given the opportunity to practice there any day after 5 PM, in addition to the few practices throughout the week.

We spoke with senior Kallin Hughes about this season and what he expects for the rest of it. Kallin says that he thinks we can make it to States if we keep practicing and everyone makes an effort to do better. Kallin is currently the #1 Golfer on the team. Kallin says he first played when he was around 10 years old, but didn’t start regularly playing until around 9th grade. To make sure he is ready to perform for all matches, Kallin tries to practice for at least 2 hours every day. I asked him what inspired him to play golf and he told me “I tried it with my dad and I realized I was pretty good, so I wanted to continue”. Kallin recently played in the district competition and shot an 80, which qualified him for states. At states Kallin will be able to compete with high-school students from all over Maryland.
