Candidate Spotlight: Amie Hoeber
September 28, 2018
Hello Titans, as many of you may know we are in the prime of the midterm voting season and quite a few of you will be 18 by November 6th. It is therefore very important for you to know who is on the ballot and how to vote. Here at Tuscarora most of us fall into the 6th congressional district of Maryland which is the only open seat in the whole state. Our former representative is Mr. John Delany who has given up his seat to focus on his bid for President in 2020. Running in his stead is David Trone (D) against Amie Hoeber (R), George Gluck (G), and Kevin Caldwell (L), all of whom have never been a sitting congress woman or man. This week we are focusing on Mrs. Amie Hoeber.
Mrs. Amie Hoeber is a wealthy business woman from Montgomery county Maryland in the 8th congressional district. Mrs. Hoeber was born in Texas and attended Stanford University for her bachelor’s degree. She has spent many of her years working for multiple consulting firms and various businesses, generally as an executive. During the Reagan administration Mrs. Hoeber worked as Deputy under Secretary of the Army after which she went back to pursuing a career in business. Now she seeks to be one of the few Republican representatives for the state of Maryland.
Mrs. Hoeber has campaigned as a moderate republican, similar to our current Governor, Larry Hogan, who has also endorsed her as a candidate for the 6th district. Here are some of the issues Mrs. Hoeber has focused on in her campaign:
- Reducing racial basis for or against any ethnicity in school, whether for magnet programs or colleges such as Harvard
- Gun Reform-Mrs. Hoeber does not intend to alter the fabric of gun rights in America but does hope to work to institute common sense gun reform, stronger enforcement of current laws, and she hopes to strengthen the current background check system
- School Safety- Mrs. Hoeber hopes also to boost school security by instituting new measures such as mandatory drills and locking of doors at all times in conjunction with an increase in coordination with police units
- Mrs. Hoeber also aims to promote more parents to stop purchasing or allowing their children to view violent video games, movies, and shows in the hope of redirecting the industry’s away from this genre to deter people from garnering ideas from these mediums
