MdBio Foundation visits Titans.
May 25, 2018
During this third week of May, Titans had a special visit from MdBio Foundation. This institution sparks interest in life-changing career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math ( STEM) for underserved communities. Reading from this we can all tell they were here for the science students. So if you had a Science class this semester I believe you went to the Biovan and enjoyed the experiment. So the question is why are they here? Their visit was based on educating us about Wildlife Forensics. We had to use genetic analyses in order to determine if any of the confiscated fins were illegally obtained.
We utilized agarose gel electrophoresis, which uses electricity to separate DNA fragment(s) according to their size. We also compared the DNA fragment(s) in our unknown sample to great white and porbeagle shark DNA that controls to determine if the unidentified fin is from a great white shark.
Here are some few pictures I had from this visit :I hope all the seniors that could visit the biovan liked it, because I believe that’s their last day of being in a science lab or should I say having a science experiment. Thanks to the MdBio Foundation for visiting.
