The 2018 Bettie Awards Finalists

Mia Egerman, Editor in Chief

The Delaplaine Arts Center downtown has been around for years, providing Frederick County with educational opportunities and experiences through various artistic outlets and displays. Bettie Delaplaine believed in the liberation of young artists and is remembered for her dedication to the community. The Frederick County Art Association remembers Bettie this month, Youth Art Month, by gifting prize money to the 2018 Bettie Awards to honor young artists and recognize everything from photography, acrylics, ceramics and more.

This year, two of our own placed as finalists and were awarded a $100 prize. Caleb Spencer and Alexa Tucker have a chance at taking home the $1,000 prize at the opening reception. Their work, a photograph by Spencer and an acrylic painting by Tucker, will be exhibited starting on March 3 at 2:00 p.m. If you’re in the area, voting starts with the opening of the exhibit and continues until the end. The work with the most votes also has a chance at a $250 award called The 2018 Bettie Award People’s Choice Winner. Next time you’re downtown, swing by the Delaplaine and check out Caleb’s self portrait and Alexa’s still life of everyday objects.
