Festival of Lights!

Festival of Lights!

Hannah Mueller, Senior Editor

The festivities surrounding the holidays always make it seem like there’s magic in the air! With how snow delicately dusts the tree tops, or the sparkling, shimmering lights that drape over our houses, as well as the way that the candles from a Menorah illuminate and warm up the area around itself- there’s something about the holidays that simply give off a cozy, enchanting aura. Many celebrations realize that and with how spirited Downtown Frederick becomes during this season, they never forget to throw the annual Festival of Lights! And like a moth to Christmas lights, many are drawn into this convivial celebration!

The Festival of Lights is an event where downtown really shows community as we all come together and catch sight of the extravagant displays of lights! It takes place this Friday, December 15th, primarily at the City Court, although signs of the event can be seen all over with the decorative lighting tangled up within the bare branches of the trees overhead. If there is ever a time that downtown looks like it may be magical, this is certainly that time. Stringed lights shine against the historical buildings like fairies balancing on a tightrope, it really is a sight to see.

The celebration officially begins at 7pm and last until 8pm- though many people stay much longer to walk the streets and possibly grab a soothing drink of hot chocolate from a nearby cafe. Attendees join in on the festivities with a moving candle lighting ceremony- progressively filling the courtyard with the candles’ warm light by passing the orange flame. You can experience songs by carolers as you walk in the streets, as well.

So make sure to stop by and be delighted by all the lights!
