Every year, for the past 28 years, Frederick County Public Schools has held the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King awards. This is an award given to “One student from every Frederick County Public School who exemplifies the courage to act and persevere in the pursuit of equity for all.”

The student chosen to represent THS this year is Marcos Gonzales who was chosen to receive the MLK award this year. Marcos is the trumpet section leader for Tuscarora Marching Band. One of the nominating teachers was Mr. John Karos who had this to say about Marcos:

“Marcos is just one of those students who not only handles his own stuff, but also commits himself to helping others, his selfless acts and his commitment made him an obvious choice for me.”

We caught up with Marcos and asked him a few questions the first of which was whether or not he was surprised to receive the nomination: “Yes I was very surprised by the nomination, I was not expecting it at all.” He was glad to get the recognition for such an honoring award. We had also asked how he felt about being nominated, he said “I feel honored, out of so many people they picked me, I feel a great sense of responsibility with this nomination.” He also said that he’s excited to represent Tuscarora High School as well.

The last question we asked if he knew why he was nominated. He said that he was told that two teachers nominated him, one of the two was band teacher, Mr. Karos. Both teachers wrote about how he was a great student that demonstrated outstanding responsibility and leadership. One student from each school was chosen to represent their school at the nomination ceremony held on January 14th, 2018 at Thomas Johnson High School. Marcos Gonzales will be representing Tuscarora High School at this ceremony.

Titan Times would like to congratulate Marcos on such an amazing nomination!!
