Bonjour, hola, and, salve, Titans! Our school’s three language clubs: French, Spanish, and, Latin, have come together in the spirit of Halloween to compete against one another in a pumpkin painting contest. Each club had gone with a theme relative to their culture and that would also pertain to this spooky holiday in one way or another, creating a collection of five painted pumpkins that portray their scene. The competition began the first week of October with clubs gathering together during FLEX to develop and brain storm ideas for their pumpkins’ themes. After each club agreed on a theme for their own pumpkins with the other two clubs having no idea what that theme may be, they begin to plan out how it will all look like and finally, the clubs would paint their pumpkins according to their ideas.

The rules of the contest were simple; the theme must relate back to Halloween and there can’t be any inappropriate imagery. Other than that, the clubs were free to do what they wanted to when it came to painting their five pumpkins. They could create a scene or configure a giant painting that would be complete when the pumpkins would be all put together or paint a different image on each pumpkin while staying within their overarching theme. For example, if there was a Belgian club, they may depict black cats and candles as Halloween in Belgium centers around the ‘unlucky black cat’ and lighting candles for passed loved ones. Only for our language clubs, they will be getting ideas from the culture of their respected language. And from that, their masterpieces made of pumpkins will rise to the occasion and be ready for the competition!

Speaking of, the competition was originally going to be held this Friday after school at 3:30, but is going to be rescheduled sometime next week, and the clubs’ pumpkin paintings will be judged by our very own principal, Mr. Berry! The leaders of the clubs; Mrs. McClain for French Club, Mrs. Seymour for Latin Club, and Mr. Jennings for Spanish Club and the members will be gathering after school on the new date and make the last of their preparations before judgement begins. The competition between the clubs may be friendly, but it is certainly a contest for the ages as we take pride in our pumpkins and cultures!

The clubs are putting forth the best of their artistic talents and hoping that it’ll be enough to win. But either way, we will have fifteen pumpkins that celebrate these three wonderful cultures and Halloween!

When the contest arrives, we will update this article and congratulate the winners- good luck, Titans!
