Procrastination (Part 2)

Samantha Rearick, Writer

(Last week I had posted the first part of this article, so if you have not read that yet please click [here] to go to the page before reading Part 2!)

Now as you can see I have fallen victim to procrastination. Though I can assure you, with the rest of these tips you and I both can battle this small struggle together.

Break the task into steps- If the task that you need to get done is drawn over a long period of time, you should be careful that you are being time efficient. Let’s take reading a book for a project you need to complete- perhaps read a chapter or two every couple days (depending on the deadline or the length of the book) that will give you enough time to get over the reading and to actually get the work done. Breaking the reading part into steps will help you feel less overwhelmed about the task and make it seem easier.

Grab a partner- What’s gonna work? Teamwork. Getting something done with a friend is not only a great way to take some of the weight off your shoulders, but it helps you get the task done faster than it would be alone. Also, the person you are completing the task with can help become a great motivation to get some work in. Though just be careful with this strategy- sometimes it may backfire and cause both of you to get off-task and not get anything done. Don’t let that happen!

Take a break- Yes, I know why you’re probably asking- “why would you take a break if that’s the reason why I’m not getting anything done?” Well you are right, sort of. Let’s say that you are getting somewhere with your task but it’s really putting a strain on you mentally or physically; it’s a good idea to take a break at this point so you can have enough energy to put yourself back into gear without a problem. Now to avoid turning your break into more procrastination, set a timer on your phone or a different device so you can know when to get started again and not stay distracted.

Just DO IT- (All Shia Labeouf references intended). But seriously, sometimes you’ve gotta get yourself together and just do what you need to do. With simple tasks- what excuses are you making at this point? Pointless ones! Do it! Get it over with! You’ll feel so much better afterwards, and perhaps even reward yourself with going back to doing nothing (Without all the stress this time)

These tips will certainly help, that is if you have the motivation to follow through with them and not to procrastinate (though there is a small chance you would do so, considering these small tasks to get your larger task started are pretty easy). Now, how about you go get some work done? Stop the lagging!
