The March for Science

astronomy, discovery, earthThis past Saturday, over 600 communities gathered around the world to participate in the March for Science. After the march gained more publicity the Earth Day Network joined the movement in hopes of bringing more awareness. With the help of the Earth Day Network the main rally, which took place at the National Mall in Washington D.C, educated people on the need for science and evidence based research. One popular speaker was Bill Nye, science educator and TV personality.

The march stemmed from President Trump’s recent threat to cut the budget of agencies that are primary funding sources for scientists. Specifically, his proposal to cut $12.6 billion will from the Department of Health and Human Services rose controversy. Prior to his statement, the issue regarding the lack of research on climate change and the state of our planet had gained attention. Advocates for the movement argued that “silencing” science could result in serious consequences. With climate change being a global issue, sidelining research could impact the sustainability of our planet. Respected scientists stated, restricting scientific research limits the ability to invent and innovate. For instance, scientists are responsible for the development of reusable energy sources in order to lessen our use of fossil fuels. Without the budget and resources to do the research, crucial innovations could not be made. Celebrities and other influencers showed their support through social media and helped to create a cascade of support. This led to large satellite marches in France, Germany, London, Portugal and more.

Overall the march was successful. Trump, in his Earth Day statement, emphasized the importance of science for our nation’s economic growth and protection. Although the march was not directly addressed, addressing the significance of science did provide comfort.
