Body Positivity!

Body Positivity!

Hannah Mueller and Samantha Rearick

The media is a great thing; it helps us to stay connected with one another, know what’s going on and live vicariously through the lives of celebrities. But for most of us, seeing the seemingly flawless images of celebrities and models can lead us to have a negative perspective of ourselves based upon the standards the media portray as realistic. A lot of us know that these photos are edited to suit what the mind perceives as attractive so we may subconsciously think that this is how we must look for others to like us. This is not the truth whatsoever.

We get ideas from the media that we should eat less to fulfill a cookie cutter idea of what beauty is; for both men and women. Men may want to become taller, bigger and more muscular while women want a smaller waist, to be bigger in the hips and chest, and symmetrical facial features. So when we don’t have such features, we can grow insecure and lose confidence in our bodies. But, we shouldn’t have to feel that way because if you look at the people around you, you realize that the insecurities they hold don’t change the way you see them as a person. So why should this be any different with yourself?

Everyone has flaws. You shouldn’t let these negative thoughts about yourself control how you feel about yourself. In fact, some people may find what you think is a flaw as a desirable trait! A way to embrace body positivity of your flaws is to accept them. Remember that all of these things help to make you who you are! Love yourself as those around you love you.
