Plane Crash In Columbia

Avery Thamavong, Writer

In recent news, a plane carrying 77 passengers, including a first-division Brazilian soccer team, crashed into a mountain in Columbia earlier this week. This unfortunate tragedy left 71 of the people on board dead (1), with the rest either lost in the wreckage or severely injured in the crash. Six people were reportedly found to have survived the crash, “…three soccer players, two crew members, and a journalist,” (2).

The plane crash was most likely due to technical/fuel difficulties. Investigators found that the plane had no fuel on impact (3), so that might pertain to the fact that the plane crashed due to the lack of fuel. The pilot was reportedly to make a refueling stop most likely due to a delayed departure, “The pilot had the option to refuel in Bogota, but headed straight to Medellin,” (3).

The world mourns for the loss of the people on board during the crash. Fans of soccer are saddened that nearly the entire Chapecoense team had been killed in the crash. Brazil, along with the entirety of South America and international soccer federations mourn and pay their respects to the Chapecoense team and their family members. Brazil closed shops this week and mass gatherings of people came together for prayer and remembrance. All of the deceased passengers will be severely missed.
