Draft Day Gone Wrong
May 2, 2016
The 2016 NFL Draft was full of surprises of all sorts, but it was what happened about 10 minutes before the draft that really made news. Laremy Tunsil, a tackle from Ole’ Miss was set to be a top ten if not top five pick this year to either San Diego at #3 or Baltimore at #6. He was the best offensive line prospect this year and many went as far as comparing him to now hall of famer Orlando Pace. Like Tunsil, Pace was a very high pick, the first overall pick to the rams back in 1997 Pace went on to have a stellar career and become a hall of famer just 6 years after retiring in 2009. Unfortunately, the start for Tunsil was not as smooth as it was for Pace. Just 10 minutes before the first pick was announced a video surfaced on Tunsil’s verified twitter account of him hitting a bong into a gas mask. It was obvious that Tunsil didn’t post this himself but it still didn’t make sense of how or why someone would do something like this just 10 minutes before the draft. His twitter was then deleted and Tunsil and his party claimed that the video was from high school and that it “Isn’t who he is”.
It became apparent pretty fast that someone was trying to get him to slide in the draft, and that is exactly what happened. Tunsil fell all the way to Miami at #13 where no one expected him to be. Obviously the 13th pick in the draft is still a great thing, however when you’re possibly the first pick at one point it can be tough to except. Due to falling from a projected #3 all the way to #13, Tunsil will lose an estimated 7 million in his rookie deal. However, being that he is one of the best prospects it shouldn’t take long for him to get a huge deal down the road.
It was reported that someone had hacked Tunsil’s twitter and Instagram accounts prior to the draft. The hacker not only posted the smoking video, but also posted screenshots that had been taken from his direct messages with some info leading to controversy involving his head coach at Ole’ Miss. The identity of the hacker has not been revealed but it is likely to think that his step dad was involved in some sort of way. Tunsil has had many issues involving his step dad, Tunsil was sued by him at one point and he also got him suspended from football at the start of the 2015 season.
The NFL announced today that they will not be placing Tunsil in the NFL drug program. Tunsil has never failed a drug test and claims that he has been clean since high school. If this is all true than Tunsil should go on to have a great career with the Miami Dolphins. To all the young and up coming players, this should be a lesson learned whether there are videos of you or not, not just of the perils of drug use but also the dangers of social media. Hopefully this all passes over and Tunsil can go on to be the great player that he is.
