Conclusion to an exciting Masters
April 13, 2016
The 2016 Masters was full of excitement and sadness. The Masters kicked off Thursday with every golfer having high hopes, but as Friday came about the golf course was slowly smashing the hopes of many golfers that were favored to possibly win. However one name remained on top, Jordan Spieth, the 22 year old led the Masters in impressive style, battling with harsh winds and a very hilly course.
As the final day of the Masters began on Sunday, Speith was still on top, however a young Englishman, Danny Willet was not far behind. Spieth lead at -7 under, the next closest score to him was Willet at -2. It seemed as if Spieth was ready to put on a second green jacket. After the front 9 Spieth boggied 10, dropping him to -6, Willet eventually birded and moved up to -3. The 12th hole at the Masters is a par 3 that is only about 145 yards, although it is a short distance, the landing area on the green is very small, with water around the hole making it a very difficult hole. Spieth was up on the tee, his first shot ended up in the water, he dropped a ball and got ready for what would now be his 3rd shot. *Splash* another ball in the water, at this point you could see Speiths anger with himself, he dropped again and hit his 5th shot. He managed to get the ball finally over the water, he ended on finishing with a quadruple-bogey. A mistake that dropped him out the lead and put him right behind the new leader Danny Willet. Willet continued to birdie his remaining holes as he finished with a 67 and a total score of -5. Spieth had 6 holes remaining as he hoped to pull off the impossible, sadly Spieth was too mentally distraught and beaten down that he wasn’t able to regain the lead and finished in 2nd place with a score of 73 for the day and a total score of -2.
Spieths sadness and disappointment with himself was clearly seen as he put the green jacket on Danny Willet, this was the Englsihmens first Major win. Many were shocked that the young American blew what seemed to be a promising lead. Spieth can only move on from his loss and get ready for the next Major, the U.S Open that will be held in June. This Masters was one full of ups and downs, and this is why many consider it to be the hardest sport ever to play.
