Book Review: The Perks of Being A Wallflower

The Perks of Being A Wallflower is a popular book that has recently been made into a movie, written by Stephen Chbosky. The main character’s name is Charlie and he’s not your average popular high school student. The book takes place as Charlie is entering his first year of high school, and he is dealing with the suicide of his best friend and the death of his favorite person in the world, his aunt Helen. He has very high anxiety about high school, so he seeks the help of a random person who we never learn the identity of.

The book is written in the format of several letters written to this mystery person. Life starts to get much easier for Charlie when he meats Patrick and Sam at a football game. They take him in, and show him how fun life can really be. He gets himself into trouble though when he agrees to go out with Alice, even though he has feelings for someone else.

Quickly the book shifts to the problems of Charlie’s mental state, and why he is the way he is. It’s a compelling story that is very different from your average high school romance novel. If you get a chance to read it or have a book you would like to see reviewed, tell us on Twitter: @THS_Newspaper
