“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear”- Lady Jessica Atreides, “Dune: Part One”
This is repeated multiple times by the main character’s-Paul Atreides-mother, who is a Bene Gesserit, a matriarchal society that possesses psychic powers. She says this multiple times, as it is a key part of their [the Bene Gesserit] training to not be afraid.
“Dune: Part One”, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a cinematic masterpiece that was released in 2021 and follows the story of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman and the son of Duke Leto Atreides (the leader of the House Atreides) and his concubine, Jessica. The planet they inhabit, Arrakis, is the only source of a highly valued material called “spice,” which is found in the dangerous desert, and is vital for space travel. It also has psychoactive properties, which comes into play later in the movie. Paul experiences visions and dreams, which leads many to believe he is the Lisan al Gaib, or, in simpler words, the messiah that will lead the Fremen (the indigenous people of Arrakis) after they were invaded on their home planet. Jessica is part of a sisterhood that trains the women how to wield psychic powers, which Jessica trains Paul in because of his prophetic visions.
Arrakis is dangerous for two main reasons in the movie: the climate and presence of giant sandworms-which are attracted to repetitive vibrations (such those produced by walking). It’s important to note they don’t seek out to kill anyone purposefully, they only are attracted to the vibrations. There is a strong political rivalry between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. Duke Leto Atreides is given control of Arrakis, however later on in the movie House Arrakis is invaded and completely destroyed-the only survivors are Paul, Lady Jessica, and Duncan-a friend and confidant of Paul. This invasion is what drives the conflict for most of the movie. The Fremen are also introduced early on in the movie as the indigenous people of Arrakis, and the movie does a great job at concealing their true intentions as a friend or foe-which is likely further elaborated on in the second movie. They know the planet like the back of their hand, and their culture along with survival skills, are highly valued in the movie.
I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys science fiction, as the world building is excellent and engaging. There is a second movie, along with a third being released in December 2026. It is a lengthy movie, about 2½ hours long, but every minute is used to provide an amazing experience that is sure to leave you wanting more.
