Is the Grinch Good or Bad?
The Grinch is a character from Dr. Seuss’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” He’s a grumpy, green creature who hates Christmas and tries to stop it from happening by stealing everything Christmas related like presents, decorations and even trees from the whos. In the Jim Carrey film, the Grinch was bullied by kids in his class growing up because of his looks- it was always on Christmas day, which is why he hates Christmas.
The Grinch also hated Christmas because he couldn’t stand all the noise, singing and joy. He never understood the warmth and the togetherness of the holiday. Plus, his heart was “two sizes too small” which made it hard for him to feel happy or connected. I had interviewed Katia Howell and she stated that “He was never the bad guy they portrayed him to be, he is extremely misunderstood and just had trauma from Christmas and every year that day reminded him of the bullying and horrible experiences he went through repeatedly. Who pretend to be these warm, loving people but the second someone looks different they treat them like their trash on the street.” When asked if she thinks the Grinch is really good or bad.
At the end of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” the Grinch had a change of heart and returned everything he stole. He sees that even without their presents, the people of Whovillie are still happy and celebrating. He understood that Christmas was about love, being together, and the community. This made his heart grow three sizes that day,
