Have you ever felt that you or your peers’ voices or opinions are not being heard in Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS)? Are there serious topics that need to be addressed that are being overlooked by authority figures? That is where the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) steps in.
The SMOB is a high school student, elected by students, to be the communication between students of Frederick County and the Board of Education. The candidates participate in a long election process, starting with applications and campaigning, and ending with the potential opportunity to represent students across the county.
This student takes on the role of advocating for each diverse perspective of students on issues they believe are important. With that, Tuscarora High School is one of the most diverse schools in Frederick County, and their own Sophia Smith is a candidate for the SMOB of the 2025-2026 school year.
Smith is a junior at Tuscarora High School, and is extremely involved in the school. She holds positions in various clubs such as Best Buddies Secretary, Spirit Club President, and Co-president for the Student Government Association (SGA). Outside of Tuscarora, Smith is the secretary of the Frederick County Association of Student Councils (FCASC), and a Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC) Division 2 caucus member.
There is no question that Smith has all the qualifications for this role, but why is she doing it? “I want to improve the sense of community, and make sure students have access to programs without financial burden,” said Smith in an interview. A few more of her campaign points are ensuring high schoolers are ready for life after graduation, have better safety in schools, and have access to equitable regulations throughout FCPS.
When asked about why her role is important she replied, “SMOB is important because they represent students on the Board of Education, […] so it is important to have accurate representation in order to ensure getting a good education.” Smith is very dedicated to her role in the community and in schools, and “want[s] to help improve our county, making sure students have access to quality education.”
Whether it’s Smith or any of the other accomplished candidates, your vote is important and valued. Voting for the Student Member of the Board of Education opens January 7, so be sure to use your student voice in the upcoming SMOB election!
