Deshaun Watson is the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding him for a variety of reasons-with some people even saying he’s one of the worst quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen. However, he has the highest money guaranteed by a contract in the NFL currently, sitting at $230 million. Watson should be benched for his performance, because at this point he’s hurting the Browns more than he is helping them.
Doing my own research, I have found that while he may not be the absolute worst-Watson is certainly getting there. He has one of the lowest QBR, which stands for total quarterback rating. It is used to measure how well a quarterback is performing in a sport on a scale of 0-100, with 50 being considered average. Anything under 25 is considered very poor performance.
Watson’s QBR is 21.7 for the whole season (which has been a total of six games with a 1-5 game outcome). This is one of the lowest QBRs the NFL has ever seen, previously being held by Ben Roethlisberger. He had a QBR of 22.6 in the Superbowl in 2006.
According to a well-known spokesperson in the sports community, Stephen A. Smith, he says, “Deshaun Watson is awful.” On top of this, in an article published by Barstool Sports, a writer explains that an essential part of why the Browns lost the game on Sunday, September 22, 2024 is due to a bad choice of Watson during the game. During the game, Watson had an opportunity to pass to Jordan Akins, but decided not to because he thought Akins was a “decoy.” The author of the article writes, “[…]we can point to that would showcase why we lost the game [on Sunday][…] Deshaun had a wide open Jordan Akins to his right, ready to catch a pass for an easy 1st down that a 3rd grader could’ve thrown.”
It’s important to note that not only do prominent figures in the sports community and fans think he’s awful, but even the statistics and his performance proves their opinion to be correct. At this point, Watson should be benched from the Cleveland Browns if they want any chance of winning
