A family goes on a little vacation and little did they know it would change their lives forever. While on vacation Ben, his wife Louise and their daughter Agnes meet another family of three: Paddy, his wife Ciara and their son Ant. Paddy, Ciara, Ben and Louise all become friends, and even start having dinner together while on vacation as the kids go play. Paddy told Ben, Louise and Agnes about Ant being born with some condition, so he doesn’t talk.
After vacation Ben, Louise and Agnes go home and soon get a letter from Paddy inviting them to his farm down in Devon. The trip starts out nice; they have great family time, the kids are playing and even have to share a room. Louise starts to get a weird feeling, but ends up ignoring it and tries to have fun while they get some time away.
Later on, Paddy and Ciara invite Ben and Louise out to dinner and the kids stay home with a babysitter. While the kids are with the babysitter, they decide to play hide and seek, with the babysitter being the seeker, and Ant and Agnes being the hidders. While finding a place to hide, Ant takes Agnes to Paddy and Ciara’s room and shows her a watch with weird writing on it, and since Ant can’t talk, Agnes isn’t understanding.
A little later in the night Louise woke up to go check on Agnes, and when she went into Ant’s room, she saw both of them gone; as she went to look for them she found them asleep in Paddy and Ciara’s bed while Paddy and Ciara were in their underwear. While Louise felt uncomfortable about the situation she grabbed Agnes and went to wake up Ben and told him they were leaving.
They got off the property before anyone woke up, but there was a problem: Agnes didn’t have her stuffed bunny that helped her calm down, so Ben had to turn the car around and go back. After going back they decided to stay for the original time they were supposed to.
After agreeing to stay there was just a weird vibe the whole time. Agnes and Ant made up a dance and decided to do a show for the parents, so outside the parents sat around a table and watched as the kids danced. Paddy started yelling at Ant saying he was offbeat and couldn’t dance right; after yelling at him and making him re-do it over and over, Agnes got scared when Paddy yelled and put his hands on Ant, but because Ben was also scared of Paddy, he made his daughter go up there and dance again, but Ant messed it up again, and Paddy gets very angry and starts physically and verbally abusing Ant. While Louise and Ben stand up, Paddy goes inside to cool down.
Ben, Louise and Ciara make conversation while Paddy went and slept, but while he was asleep, Ant went into the room and stole Paddy’s keys. With Paddy’s keys, Ant grabs Agnes and shows her this lock on a barn door, and he unlocks it with the key and shows her the entrance to an underground bunker.
They enter the bunker and it’s full of luggage and things that seem like personal items to other people, and in there, Ant shows Agnes’ picture of Ant and a whole other family standing next to Paddy and Ciara and they have a different child in the picture. Right then and there Agnes realized Paddy and Ciara meet families on vacations, lure them to their home and kill the parents and take the kid. While down in this bunker Ant shows Agnes that his tongue was cut and that’s why he couldn’t talk.
They leave the bunker and Ant goes to put the keys back while Agnes has to try and save her family. First she tells her mom, then her dad, and now they have to find their way out. Will they?
When asked about the movie James McAvoy who played Paddy said, “[Paddy] is so interesting to me because there’s always this undertone of toxicity,” explains McAvoy. “But he puts a civilized face on it. He’s self-aware about it. It’s disarming, you know? There’s a sense of humor. He accepts that he’s not perfect. It’s sort of admirable.”
This movie was a huge shocker for me, I didn’t expect the violent outcome and I just thought it was going to be a little scary movie. This movie follows a great story line and a great plot. While in the theater there were a few jumpscares, but when Paddy threw Ant into the water was definitely the turning point. I knew something was off with Paddy and Ciara, but I had no clue it was something this deep and scary.
The whole time Ben, Louise, Agnes and Ant were in the house I had a fear that one of them was gonna be killed or hurt, but all in all they escaped with not many marks on them. I felt this movie was also kinda touching because you can see a different point of view from Ant, he was kidnapped and put through a lot because of Paddy and Ciara. During this movie I felt myself excited for what was next, and this whole movie kept you on edge till the very last second. If you are into psychological horror thrillers this is definitely a good movie for you.
