Looking for a fun activity to celebrate Halloween this October? Consider walking a ghost tour through Maryland’s most haunted city. Frederick. From stories of gruesome deaths, to personal stories of those who have encountered the dead, Maryland Heritage Tours engages you in the horrors of the paranormal all throughout their 90 minute ghost tour.
During the summer for my birthday, my friends and I had the pleasure of walking the tour. The heat was brutal and there were very few people walking with us; expectations were very low, but we were quickly proved wrong. The tour was 90 minutes long, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and despite the heat, the tour guide was full of energy, keeping our attention and engaging us with his stories during the entire tour.
The tour guide shared several stories about the different buildings and locations in Downtown Frederick, some of which include: Tyler’s Spite House, Court House Square, National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Barbara Fritchie’s house and even the Weinberg Center. Each story told has been researched by Maryland Heritage Tours; the tour guides also provide personal encounters from employees or those who have visited said places. The tour guides first provide the historic information before then diving into the different paranormal sights seen.
My personal favorite story was the story of Tyler’s Spite House. When driving down West Church St. in Downtown Frederick, you’ll see the house at the very end that looks as though you might crash straight into it; that house is known as the Tyler-Spite House. In 1814, Tyler Page built the house on 112 West Church St. out of spite in order to prevent the plans of extending the road. By law, the city couldn’t start construction on the road due to Page’s construction of the house. The home was finished before the death of Page and stands strong to this day. The sound of a rocking chair, strange presences and even the sight of an old man through the window, has led many to believe that Page has held onto his spite even in the afterlife.
Those who have walked that tour have left several positive reviews online; one reviewer, Amy S. wrote, “The tour guide is phenomenal, entertaining and knowledgeable. We had a great evening and would highly recommend. It’s less than a mile walk and we visited about seven scary locations in Downtown Frederick.”
