Every high school world wide probably has students falling asleep in classes or even not coming into school on time due to them sleeping in.
As a senior in high school I even caught myself sleeping in class waking up thinking, “oh I needed that little nap.” This is due to my lack of sleep, and it’s not that I can’t sleep early, it’s the fact I can’t. I have a part time job and do a sport, yet I do that on top of school too. I try to do my homework at night when I get the chance to, and then I would stay up till late during work.
When I wake up at 6 in the morning to get ready for school, I’m not even trying to go to school. I’m not awake enough. This is the case for most students; they are too tired and not motivated to do work.
A good solution to this would be to give students a FLEX block again, everyday, so that people can have time to rest or do work if they want to. That little block for people to rest or relieve stress would be good for them to be energized for their day. Another solution for this is to start school later.
Both are very good solutions so that students can be more awake to do school work and not have to sleep in class.
I have seen in many of my classes where students put their head down for a good 20-30 minutes and just get up and do as much work as they can, they’re more awake now they got that little rest they needed.
Back when we had FLEX people would be less stressed because they had a break between classes to just relax and get a brain break. A way we could bring this back is maybe teachers should start giving breaks in class where students can just relax and clear their heads.
Maybe the problem is that students don’t sleep early or that school starts too early. What could be the solution?
